Amman, Jordan

4.19 Amman
Today I arrived in sprawling Amman... an urban planner's nightmare. Due to several waves of rapid urbanization (mostly from political and economic refugees of surrounding regions), there is little organization to Amman's urban form and haphazard street network. The city is several square kilometers of reinforced concrete buildings spread over 7 hills. Oh yeah... and there are some fabulous Roman and Ottoman ruins hidden in the mix. I visited a handicrafts museum and saw great examples of the area's famed inlay work. Can you imagine the patience needed to cover an entire dresser with teeny tiny slices of shell, rock, and tile? Wow.
